RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Package

This is a major package involving a large amount of invested time, energy, commitment and money. At Yachtmaster we include additional training weeks to ensure you leave our program as prepared as possible. As times have changed the journey to achieve a Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence has become shorter. We believe that 14-16 weeks is required to produce a solid reliable candidate. We have a global reputation as a school that produces excellent sailors.

If you are serious about learning to sail and a following a possible career in the Professional Yachting Industry, our Yachtmaster Ocean Package provides you with the standard internationally, recognised qualifications and skills needed to succeed and become an expert sailor.

With no prior experience, this course takes you through all the RYA training modules up to Yachtmaster Ocean, along with several additional short courses, training and commercial endorsement requirements to ensure a high level of competence and confidence.
You will receive at least 2500 miles of thorough sail training for your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean exams.

Upon successful completion of this course, you can receive a commercially endorsed RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence, which is valid for use as a Master of Yachts, up to 200gt in Category 0 waters (unlimited).

RYA/MCA Competent Crew Practical
During this essential introductory course, you will be introduced to the wonderful world of sailing! The aim is to build a solid foundation in the correct procedures, including safety, seamanship, rope work, knots, splicing and helmsman-ship that will equip you with all you need to be a competent crew member. You will be exposed to the latest sailing terminology and learn many different approaches and techniques.

RYA/MCA VHF Radio Operation SRC (Short Range Certificate)
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. If you own a marine radio hand held or fixed set, you are required by law to hold an operator’s license. This course will teach you the basics of operating and understanding a VHF radio on board a vessel.

We use modified VHF training Radio’s produced by ICOM and SIMRAD. These have been modified so that transmissions are suppressed.

This is an introductory course to the many theoretical parts of sailing. During the course, you will be introduced to all subjects needed for you to get back on the water and further your development as a competent yachtsmen and Skipper.

RYA/MCA Diesel Engine Maintenance
By gaining the RYA/ MCA Diesel Engine Maintenance Certificate, you will be able to manage and maintain a Marine Diesel Engine. You will learn about necessary engine maintenance and systems and how to avoid most mechanical breakdowns while out at sea.

This course is also useful to candidates wanting to work alongside engineers on Yachts or smaller Super Yachts and entitles the holder to be in charge of a Sailing Vessel’s engine, up to 750 kW, in Category 0 Waters.

Presented in our classroom which is based at the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town.

Your instructor will have extensive experience in maintaining and repairing various marine motors up to a substantial amount of horse power.

RYA/MCA Day Skipper Practical
During this course, you will learn to Skipper the boat and Manage crew. You’ll get the chance to put your navigational and skippering ability to practice. On board, the aim is to expose you to as many different situations as possible. Mostly run in the Langebaan area, we also run from the Royal Cape Yacht Club.

This course is important in that it’s the first step and introduction to the amazing world of navigation, Skippering and seamanship!

RYA/MCA Radar
Radar is an important component in safety at sea. On this course, you will learn the proper use and understanding of Radar equipment. You will learn how to use small boat Radar to assist decision-making in navigation, pilotage and collision avoidance.

We use a state of the art Radar Simulator on a PC and projector to prepare students for the use of real equipment fitted on vessels at sea.

The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory course is an Advanced Course in Chartwork, Navigation, Meteorology for Candidates of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore Exams.
The Theory Course is the Same for Motor and Sail.

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal practical followed by Skippered Passages and Mile building
Put your theoretical knowledge from the Coastal/ Offshore Theory certification into practice as you take to the seas and improve your skills.

While living aboard the yacht, you will get a chance to practice your seamanship, boat handling, heavy weather tactics, night sailing, coastal navigation and leadership/Skippering skills.

These weeks are also there for you to obtain your 2500 nautical miles and 60-mile skippered passages required for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Practical Exam.

Practical Exam Preparation
This course will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to pass your RYA Yachtmaster Offshore exam and be a competent sailor. The training you will receive during this course is of a high caliber, but the final knowledge and skill you will acquire exceed all expectations. This practical training course is presented by a certified and highly experienced Yachtmaster Instructor.

At the end of the preparation weeks you will be examined by a certified RYA Examiner.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory
This is a course in astro-navigation, worldwide meteorology and ocean currents, which also reveals the mysteries of the sextant. It assumes a knowledge of all subjects covered in all the other shore-based courses (RYA Day Skipper & Coastal/Offshore Theory).

NOTE! The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate is required BEFORE you can take your RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Exam.

After completing your Ocean Theory Course, we take you to sea for 48 hours. During this time, you will take the sights required to undertake your Ocean exam. On completion, we then book your slot with a RYA Ocean Examiner.

Upon successful completion of your RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Theory and practical ocean sights, you will take your final examination – RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Oral.

This is an outsourced course and has been designed to provide you with the skills and background knowledge needed to be successful as a deckhand on any yacht around the world. As a deck hand, you will be responsible for maintenance, mooring and cargo handling as well as guest relations.

Duration: 3-4 days

This includes:

• Super yachting industry
• Deck maintenance skills (filing and fairing, varnishing, teak-oiling, priming, deck acid)
• Wash downs
• General deck hand duties
• Anchoring
• Water sports
• Watch keeping
• Line handling and safety drills.
• Familiarization with crew houses, crewing agencies and job finding techniques, offshore bank accounts.

 

 

Commercial Endorsement Requirements

You will need to complete STCW and the RYA Online PPR courses as well as an ENG1 Medical Examination should you wish to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

STCW
STCW certificates are internationally recognized marine safety certificates, which are required to enable you to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

This Internationally accredited and recognized medical examination is vital to further your career on commercial vessels in the yachting and super yachting industries. Only medicals conducted by an MCA approved Medical Practical (not a General Practitioner) will be accepted.
