During this essential introductory course, you will be introduced to the wonderful world of sailing! The aim is to build a solid foundation in the correct procedures, including safety, seamanship, rope work helmsman-ship and sail trim that will equip you with all you need to be a competent crew member.
You’ll also be exposed to latest sailing terminology and learn many different approaches and techniques

RYA Day Skipper Theory

Become a navigational explorer with this 5-day theoretical course. Learn how to use navigational tools, electronic navigation aids and build confidence to make wise decisions onboard.
Instructor student ratio is carefully considered to ensure balanced learning.
This module is applicable to both Motor and Sail.
Our Theory Modules are presented in our state-of-the-art classroom based at the Royal Cape Yacht Club under the watchful eye of Table Mountain!

RYA Day Skipper Practical

During this course, you will learn to Skipper the boat and Manage crew. You will have the chance to put your navigational and skippering ability into practice. On board, the aim is to expose you to as many different situations as possible. This course is usually run in Saldanha Bay (tidal waters). However, we also run this course from the Royal Cape Yacht club in Cape Town.

This course is important in that it’s the first step and introduction to the amazing world of practical navigation, skippering and seamanship!

This includes:

• Giving safety briefing
• Use of emergency equipment
• Engine checks and trouble shooting
• Learning how to be a skipper and manage the boat and crew
• Sail trim, handling and spinnaker work
• Maneuvering under power in confined spaces
• Maneuvering under sail in confined spaces
• Improved sailing and sail trim

• Man-overboard recovery techniques

Winter 2019 Sail Training Special
Starts from 1 June 2019

Sailing in the winter is by far the best time of the year for sail training in the Cape. The weather is mild with a lot of sun on the arid West Coast.
We are pleased to offer a special Day Skipper course which can qualify you for both RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and SAS (South African Sailing).
This will prepare you for the Cape Summer sailing season and for the Caribbean season.
The RYA Courses are held in the Saldanha Bay and Langebaan lagoon and are live aboard for two five-day modules.
The RYA Day Skipper Theory will be held at Royal Cape Yacht Club Cape Town.

RYA Day Skipper Practical – 5 days on board
We meet you at our classroom at 7am on Monday morning at Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town and transport you to Saldanha Bay, up the West Coast of Southern Africa.
We will transport you back to Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town on Friday afternoon after the course.

We take a maximum of five students per course and transport is provided from Cape Town to Saldanha Bay in need.

The RYA Day Skipper Course Completion Certificate will be registered with the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) in the United Kingdom and is acceptable worldwide.

You will only be required to bring the following with:
• A sailing suit or weatherproof jacket and pants
• Warm clothes
• ZAR 200 for a temporary access card to Royal Cape Yacht Club, where you will receive discounts on meals and drinks.
• Sleeping bag
• Toiletries
• Towel
• Sunblock and sunhat
• Beanie (warm hat that covers your ears)
• Non-slip shoes
• Sunglasses
• 2 colour passport photographs for your RYA Day Skipper Practical course completion certificate.

SAS – South African Sailing
To skipper a sailing boat over 9 meters in South Africa you are required by law to hold an appropriate Certificate of Competence. South African Sailing (SAS) is the only body that South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) has authorised to issue Certificates of Competence for sailing boats.

SAS Day Skipper
Holders are qualified to skipper a sailboat at sea from sunrise to sunset. Local waters are defined as 15 nautical miles from the skippers’ home port, or 25 miles from their home port provided they are no more than 15 nautical miles from an approved safe haven.

We can assist you with the SAS Day Skipper Theory on a Saturday and Sunday (2 day in classroom training) at an extra fee of ZAR 2,000.00. You are welcome to take your SAS Day Skipper Practical exam when you are on board for your RYA Day Skipper Practical course.
SA Sailing needs a SAMSA SRC Radio course certificate. We can we can arrange the Radio course for you over 2 days at a fee of R2,000.00. The fees for the Radio certificate is payable to SAMSA at R690 extra and a fee for the SAS Day Skipper Practical certificate is payable directly to SAS for R1,110.00.

Please note that we also offer the following at the usual pricing:

  • RYA SRC VHF Radio – 1 day course in our classroom for R1,600.00
  • 11 day STCW – to enable you to work abroad
  • 4 Day Deckhand course
