STCW

STCW certificates are internationally recognized marine safety certificates, which are required to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

The modules include

  • Elementary First Aid
  • Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention
  • Personal Survival Techniques with Proficiency in Life Rafts
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties

Duration: 11 days – on shore accommodation and meals required.

1) COMPETENCE IN DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES – STCW CODE A-VI/6-2

Scope

This course is intended to provide the knowledge required for vessel personnel who are assigned specific security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan to perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code A – VI / 6-2 and/or Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 s amended and/or the IMO ISPS Code.

Objectives

Those that successfully complete the course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to undertake the duties assigned under the SSP. The knowledge shall include, but not limited to:

  • Knowledge of current security threats and patterns
  • Recognise the detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices
  • Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
  • Techniques used to circumvent security measures
  • Crowd management and control techniques
  • Security related communications
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans
  • Operation of security equipment and systems
  • Testing, calibrating and at sea maintenance of security equipment and systems
  • Inspection, control and monitoring techniques and
  • Methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores
  • Entry Standards

It is assumed that those attending this course will be serving seafarers (or other ship’s personnel) and are likely to be assigned specific security duties in connection with the Ship Security Plan.

Course Certificate

Documentary evidence should be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed training in, “Maritime Security for Ship Personnel with Specific Security Duties” based on this course.

2) ELEMENTARY FIRST AID – STCW CODE A-VI/1-3

Aims

This course aims to provide the training for learners to provide elementary first aid on board ship, in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. It should also be understood that this course is ONLY valid for seafarers who are going to work in the Super Yachting Industry (RYA) and the Cruise line Industry, it is not valid in any other sector of the maritime industry.

Objectives

This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1, Table A-VI/1-3. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in elementary first aid, a learner will be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills or a person in charge of medical care on board.

Entry Standards

The course is open to all seafarers who are serving on board, Super Yachting Industry (RYA) and the Cruise line Industry, it is not valid in any other sector of the maritime industry. There are no particular educational requirements.

Course Certificate

On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-3.

3) PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES – STCW CODE A-VI/1-1

Aims

This course aims to provide the training for learners to provide personal survival techniques on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.

Objectives

This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A – VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1. On meeting the minimum standards of competence in personal survival techniques, a learner will have the knowledge and skills to work within a shipboard team. He or she will understand the basic instructions and be sufficiently aware of his or her roles in order to contribute to survival

Entry Standards

This course is designed to equip the itinerant first-time seafarer with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit into the safety systems of the vessel and company. They will be sufficiently familiar with these systems and will also be aware of where to access additional information to broaden this basic knowledge Course Certificate On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standards of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.

4) PERSONAL SAFETY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY – STCW CODE A-VI/1-4

General Understanding

These courses are designed for the Seafarer that are already in possession of a VALID certificate that is about to expire. Certificates that have already expired are NOT VALID and the person will have to repeat the entire course again.

This model course aims to provide the training for learners to provide personal safety and social responsibility on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code.

Objectives

This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A – VI/1, Table A-VI/1-4. On meeting the minimum standards of competence in personal safety and social responsibility, a learner will have the knowledge and skills to work to fit into the safety systems of the vessel and company. They will be sufficiently familiar with these systems and will also be aware of where to access additional information to broaden this basic knowledge.

5) FIRE FIGHTING AND FIRE PREVENTION – STCW CODE A-VI/1-2

Scope

The course is open to all seafarers and prospective seafarers and should be completed prior to employment on a sea-going vessel. The emphasis of this course is to produce sea-going personnel who are properly trained in terms of the International Standards and Certification for Watchkeepers (STCW).

The training programme, MARINE FIRE FIGHTING, is accredited by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and its emphasis is to ensure Safety of Lives at Sea. (SOLAS). The course aims to provide the training for candidates in firefighting and fire prevention in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code, according to the syllabus set out in Table A-VI/1 – 2 and the SAMSA code.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, all learners should be able to demonstrate competence in:

  • Minimizing the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire.
  • Fighting and extinguishing fires. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in fire prevention and firefighting, the learner will be competent to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the vessel and to use fire appliances correctly and effectively.
