RYA Day Skipper

Practical

This course is important in that it is the first step and introduction to the amazing world of practical navigation, skippering and seamanship!

Pre-Course Requirements:

The RYA Day Skipper Practical course assumes knowledge of the RYA Day Skipper theory and practical experience to at least the level of an RYA Competent Crew with 100 nautical miles logged.

During this course, you will learn to Skipper the boat and Manage crew. You will have the chance to put your navigational and skippering ability into practice. On board, the aim is to expose you to as many different situations as possible. This course is run either in Cape Town or in Langebaan / Saldanha Bay lagoon (tidal waters). 

We take a maximum of five students per course.

Duration: 5 days on board sail training

Venue: Students are required to meet at Royal Cape Yacht Club, Cape Town. 

Course Fees Include:

  • Living on board on of our yachts during this practical week (meals and accommodation included)
  • The use of all our navigational equipment
  • RYA course completion certificate which is registered with the RYA

Course Fees Exclude:

  • Accommodation, meals and transport required for any other time in Cape Town.

  • Learning how to be a skipper and manage the boat and crew
  • Sail trim, handling and spinnaker work
  • Maneuvering under power in confined spaces
  • Maneuvering under sail in confined spaces
  • Improved sailing and sail trim
  • Motoring and sailing up to mooring buoys
  • Anchoring
  • Various berthing situations
  • Man overboard recovery techniques
  • Distress, safety and seamanship
  • Night Sailing
  • GPS and other electronic aids
  • Navigation and Piloting techniques
  • Meteorology and weather forecasting
  • International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Man Overboard
  • Distress
  • 100 nautical miles and 4-night hours

 

Please note:

Students are required to bring the following on their first day with Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School:

  • R1,500.00 CASH deposit /security for any loss or damage to yachts, equipment etc. At the end of your training, if no loss or damage has been noted, the deposit will be returned to you in cash.
  • R100 CASH deposit for a temporary access card to Royal Cape Yacht Club. Students are requested to make their way directly to the reception on their first day and pay the deposit and receive the card. At the end of your training, please return the card to Reception where the deposit will be returned to you.
  • Colour passport photographs for the following certificates: SRC Radio, RYA Day Skipper Practical, RYA Coastal Skipper Practical, Prep & Exam (x2), Commercial Endorsement Application, RYA Powerboat level 2.
  • A sleeping bag for practical courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. Costs R500.
  • Foul weather clothing, for practical on-board courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. (10% discount offered only to our booked students).
