Duration:
5-7 days Preparation for the examination followed by 2 days of practical examination with an RYA Examiner. 

Pre-course requirements

Requirements for RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal:

  • 400 Nautical miles for candidates holding RYA Day skippers or 800 nautical miles for other
  • 12 Days Sea time
  • Two days as skipper
  • 1x 60 or more nautical mile passages
  • A Copy of First Aid Certificate
  • A Copy of your RYA SRC VHF Radio Certificate
  • A Copy of your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory Course Completion Certificate
  • Logbook to Show Mileage to Examiner
  • 2 Passport Size Colour Photos
  • Credit Card Details for your RYA Practical Exam fee.

Requirements for RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore:

  • 50 Days Sea Time
  • 5 Days as Skipper
  • 2500 Nautical Miles – Half of which must be in Tidal Waters
  • 5 Passages over 60nm, including 2 Overnight and 2 as the Skipper
  • A Copy of First Aid Certificate
  • A Copy of your RYA SRC VHF Radio Certificate
  • A Copy of your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore Theory Course Completion Certificate
  • Logbook to Show Mileage to Examiner
  • 2 Passport Size Colour Photos
  • Completed examination application along with online payment for the examination.

For your Mileage to be Accepted by the RYA:

  • Your mileage needs to be from within the last 10 years which must be logged and signed off by the Skipper.
  • Your mileage needs to be gained under sail or motor on a sailing yacht and you also need half tidal miles (i.e. not all gained in the Med)
  • The Sailing yacht needs to be less than 24m / 79ft or 200gt

Course Fees Include:

  • All onboard expenses including 3 meals a day
  • All required publications and navigational equipment
  • RYA exam passage plan

Excluded from Course Fees (payable directly to the RYA by you):

RYA exam fees of £173 RYA Yachmaster Coastal and £224 for RYA Yachtmaster Offshore.

Please note:

Students are required to bring the following on their first day with Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School:

  • R1,500.00 CASH deposit /security for any loss or damage to yachts, equipment etc. At the end of your training, if no loss or damage has been noted, the deposit will be returned to you in cash.
  • R100 CASH deposit for a temporary access card to Royal Cape Yacht Club. Students are requested to make their way directly to the reception on their first day and pay the deposit and receive the card. At the end of your training, please return the card to Reception where the deposit will be returned to you.
  • Colour passport photographs for the following certificates: SRC Radio, RYA Day Skipper Practical, RYA Coastal Skipper Practical, Prep & Exam (x2), Commercial Endorsement Application, RYA Powerboat level 2.
  • A sleeping bag for practical courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. Costs R500.
  • Foul weather clothing, for practical on-board courses, alternatively this can be ordered and purchased from Yachtmaster and will be ready for you on your arrival. (10% discount offered only to our booked students).

Course Content

This course will equip you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to pass your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore exam and be a competent Yachtsman. The training you will receive during this course is of a high caliber, the final knowledge and skill you will acquire exceed all expectations. This practical training course is presented by a certified and highly experienced RYA Yachtmaster Instructor.
All instructors teaching this module at our center have been hand-picked by the Principal Alex Cousins. Instructors teaching this module have proven safety records and are all highly experienced in sailing craft operations. They have been proven to be highly effective in advancing a candidate’s skills no matter what level of experience.

On completion of Yachtmaster Coastal exam you will obtain the following:

RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence which is valid for use as Master of Yachts up to 24m in length, in Category 3 Waters – (20 nm from a safe haven).

On completion of Yachtmaster Offshore exam you will obtain the following:

RYA  Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence which is valid for use as Master of Yachts up to 500gt less than 24m in Category 1 Waters – (150nm from a safe haven).

Commercial Requirements

You will require to complete STCW and RYA Online PPR courses as well as an ENG1 Medical Examination
should you wish to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

 

STCW

STCW certificates are internationally recognized marine safety certificates, which are required to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.

The modules include Elementary First Aid, Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention, Personal Survival Techniques with Proficiency in Life Raft, Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities and Proficiency in Designated Security Duties.

Duration: 11 days (12 days if you would like to obtain a SAMSA Commercial Ticket by obtaining the STCW Medical First Aid at Sea Certificate).

 

RYA Online PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities)

This online course is compulsory for new and re-validating RYA Commercial Endorsement holders and is broken down into four modules (Commercial environment, People, Vessel and Purpose) that will aid in your ability to care for and ensure the safety of other crew members and passengers, no matter how big the ship.

 

ENG 1 Medical Examination
(Recommended pre-course requirement)
This Internationally accredited and recognized medical check up is vital to further your career on commercial vessels in the yachting and super yachting industries. Only medicals conducted by an MCA approved Doctor (not a general practitioner) will be accepted.

Fees: Currently R2,800.00 (paid directly to the Doctor).
